These stems are densely covered with golden spines, giving the plant a chartreuse appearance similar to the golden barrel cactus. The small pink or pale lavender flowers provide a beautiful contrast to the yellow spines. Typically, the plant reaches 30-60(-80) cm in height and 60-120 cm in width, with 16-24 or more stems branching near the ground. The stems are 6-9 cm in diameter and grow erect or ascending. To best cultivate this plant, use a mineral-rich, well-draining soil with minimal organic matter. This species is native to limestone areas in Texas and Mexico, so supplementing with calcium may benefit its growth.
